Welcome from the Director

Since 2011, the Program for Biomedical Ethics at Yale School of Medicine has served as a nexus for a community of individuals from throughout the medical campus and beyond who share a common interest in education, research, and clinical practice in the field of medical ethics. I welcome you on behalf of myself and our Co-Director Dr. Jennifer Miller, and our associate directors, Dr. Jack Hughes, Dr. Sarah Hull, and our program manager Karen P. Kolb.

Our affiliated faculty and staff is drawn from the Yale School of Medicine as well as members of the Schools of Nursing, Law, Divinity, Epidemiology and Public Health and Yale-New Haven Hospital staff, colleagues from the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics, The Hastings Center and others. The Program for Biomedical Ethics incorporates a diverse group that brings a wide range of experience and expertise to the table. Many of those on our affiliated faculty and staff are known nationally and internationally in the field of bioethics.

Our program coordinates the ethics education of Yale medical students over the course of the four years, including assistance for those who choose to write their thesis in this area. In addition, educational programs are provided for other members of the Yale medical community, such as journal clubs, working groups and special conferences.

Each academic year, we have a wonderful slate of local and invited speakers for our monthly evening seminar series.

The Program for Biomedical Ethics at Yale School of Medicine provides multidisciplinary leadership regarding the ethical and social aspects of health care and medical research.

Our interdisciplinary team draws upon philosophy, law and social and behavioral sciences to provide expert biomedical ethics consultations for families, researchers, physicians and other health care providers. Additionally, the Program for Biomedical Ethics develops and presents various ethics-related educational programs throughout the academic year for medical, nursing and physician assistant students, the community, Yale faculty as well as local, regional and national health care professionals.

Mark Mercurio, MD, MA, and Jennifer E. Miller, PhD, are Co-Directors for the Program for Biomedical Ethics. The Associate Directors of the Program for Biomedical Ethics are John S. Hughes, MD and Sarah Hull, MD. Karen P. Kolb, MA, APR, is the Program Manager.

• Support a community of faculty and students interested in biomedical ethics at Yale School of Medicine.
• Coordinate medical and physician assistant student educational activities related to medical ethics, including support and guidance for students who choose bioethics as a topic for their thesis or participation in the MHS program.
• Serve as a resource and assist in the coordination of activities related to medical ethics for the Office of Clinical Affairs.
• Serve as a resource and assist in the coordination of activities related to medical ethics for research, graduate school and post-graduate education programs.
